Ghana – Accra

Hello, I'm honored to serve as City Engagement & Air Quality Analytics Specialist with EcoBreath for Cities in Accra, focusing on air quality analytics and risk perception research. I hold a Master's degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development from the University of Ghana, where my research examines the critical relationship between measured air pollution and how communities actually perceive air quality in their daily lives. Working in Accra's urban, traffic-dominated environments, I've discovered that what people experience and understand about air pollution often differs significantly from what the data shows—and this gap matters deeply for effective intervention. My work combines field-based air quality monitoring with community perception studies to understand how exposure patterns, mobility, and socio-environmental factors shape public awareness. These insights are essential for designing communication strategies and policies that truly resonate with the communities we serve. At EcoBreath, I'm passionate about bridging science and society—transforming complex environmental data into knowledge that empowers citizens and informs responsive, inclusive urban governance. I believe that lasting change in air quality begins when we understand how people experience pollution in their everyday lives. I'm excited to collaborate with the EcoBreath team and our partners to advance cleaner, healthier, and more resilient cities across Africa

Dr. Garima Raheja

Senior Climate Research Strategist

I am thrilled to join Ecobreath for Cities as Senior Climate Research Strategist, where I can bridge my decade of experience in air quality research, clean energy innovation, and climate policy to accelerate urban environmental solutions. Cities are at the epicenter of our climate challenge—they consume 78% of global energy and produce 70% of carbon emissions, yet they also hold the greatest potential for transformative change. My work at Ecobreath will focus on developing data-driven, scalable research strategies that turn urban centers into climate solution hubs. Drawing from my experience developing low-cost air quality sensors during my PhD at Columbia, my current work on Google's 24/7 carbon-free energy goals, and my policy experience at The White House, I bring a unique perspective that spans from grassroots community science to global climate diplomacy. At Ecobreath, I'm excited to leverage this multidisciplinary approach to tackle the complex intersection of air quality, energy systems, and urban sustainability. Our research agenda will prioritize three key areas: advancing real-time environmental monitoring technologies for cities, developing equitable clean energy transition pathways, and creating evidence-based policy frameworks that communities worldwide can adapt and implement. Having led workshops across six continents, I understand that climate solutions must be both scientifically rigorous and culturally responsive. The urgency of the climate crisis demands that we move beyond incremental improvements to breakthrough innovations. At Ecobreath for Cities, we're not just researching the future of urban sustainability—we're building it. Together, we will empower cities to become the engines of climate resilience and environmental justice our world desperately needs. The breath of our cities can and must become cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable. Let's make it happen."
